At the south end of Ulica Szeroka is the Old Synagogue. As its name suggests, this was the oldest synagogue in Cracow, being built initially around 1400 and extensively revbuilt towards the end of the 16th C.
As such, this synagogue became the centre for Jewish life, as well as housing the Jewish Rabbinical Council of Elders.
During the war, the building was used for storage, and the Jewish artefacts were destroyed. It was restored in 1956 (which was a surprise to me, having been brought up on stories of Communist oppression)
The old photograph was taken in 1927, and shows senior members of the Jewish community waiting for the official visit of the President of Poland
