Plac Novy, or the New Square, is apparently still called Jewish Square by Cracovians. It is, as then, a cross between farmers’ market and flea-market, and although I enjoyed its somewhat dowdy yet brash appearance, it was fairly clear that we were in a much less affluent area of Krakow. Just off the square is the recently renovated Isaac’s Synagogue; I have included a picture of it from 1907 to show how the market flourished still then. I also include a few snaps of the market, for no other reason than because I like them, although the - presumably reproduction - SS coal-scuttle helmet is a little chilling.
